Online users will now need a cell phone with text message service to log in to their account at https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/SiView.do (My Social Security).
The Social Security Administration has added a new security step, two-step authentication, to access your benefit information and statements online.
- First, you'll enter your Username and Password.
- Next, you must enter the one-time security code texted to your cell phone. The code will be valid for 10 minutes.
This multi-factor authentication procedure has been optional since My Social Security launched in 2012. It is now mandatory as a result of an executive order that requires all federal agencies to provide more security authentication for online services.
Now would be a good time to log in and test this new step and download your recent statement for your records.
If you don't have a text-enabled cell phone or don't want to provide your cell phone number, you will not be able to access your My Social Security account.
